Where you need one
Not every Georgian road needs a 4x4, but the ones that do will punish a car that cannot cope. Here is the honest picture.
The road to Ushguli is rough, high and slow. A proper four-wheel drive is not a luxury here, it is the price of entry, and it is seasonal.
The Abano Pass to Omalo is one of the most demanding mountain roads anywhere, open only in the warmer months. Take a capable 4x4 and your time.
The Military Highway is paved, so an SUV is about comfort and winter confidence rather than necessity. The side road up to Gergeti church does want a 4x4.
Georgia's quieter corners reward higher clearance once the tarmac runs out. Match the car to how far off the main road you plan to go.
4x4 FAQ
Only for the high mountain regions. For Tbilisi, the wine country, the coast and the paved highway to Kazbegi, a normal car or SUV is fine. For Svaneti and Tusheti the roads genuinely demand a real four-wheel drive, and trying them in a 2WD car is a mistake.
